Mrs. John Harmelink, 93, died Friday morning at the Nursing Wing at Sheldon following a lingering illness.

Kate was born October 19, 1886 in rural Hospers, the daughter of Peter and Edith (Sipma) De Jong. She married John Harmelink on February 25, 1990 at Newkirk. Mr. Harmelink died August 23, 1960. The couple farmed most of their life in the Newkirk area, and in 1976 she entered the nursing wing at Sheldon. Mrs. Harmelink was a member of the Newkirk Reformed Church.

Survivors include Mrs. August (Fanny) Jonker of Orange City, Peter of Alton, Newman of Newkirk, Mrs. Ray (Edith) Holton of Bakerfield, California, Mrs. Peter (Florence) Sorgendager of Sibley, Mrs. Willard (Eunice) Vander Hoef of Engelwood, Colorado, and John Jr. of Newkirk. There are 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Also one sister, Mrs. Gerrit (Dena) Beyer of Sioux Center. She was preceded in death by one daughter, (Katheryn Drost), one son, Kenneth, two sisters and three brothers.

Services were held Monday, August 18 at the Newkirk Reformed Church with Reverend Clarence Van Heukelom officiating. Organist, Mrs. Audley Dolphin, duet by Lloyd Grotenhuis and Stan De Haan. Casket bearers John Lind, Lyle Harmelink, David Harmelink, Kenneth Zorgendrager, Daniel Harmelink, Douglas Harmelink, and John Alan Harmelink. Interment at Newkirk Cemetery, arrangements by Van Gelder Funeral Home of Orange City.
