From the Boyden Reporter, October 8, 1914:

In Memoriam

Died at his home in our city on Monday, October 5th, John Walbrink, aged 79 years, 2 months and 10 days. He was born in Friesland, Holland and while yet quite young came to America and for 10 years lived at Grand Rapids, Mich. From there he came to Boyden where he has spent the remainder of his life, being the oldest resident of our town.

But he is gone! Another name is stricken from the ever lessening roll of our old settlers [followed by several sentimental comments, not personal to the deceased other than to say that he had passed his golden wedding day].

There is no language at our command by which we can fittingly portray the sincerity of this man's Christian character and in the experience of a lifetime the writer hereof, can safely say he never met one who seemed more to walk hand in hand with God. Conscience guided every act. He was strictly honest and honorable in any service he rendered. To man, woman or child, saint or sinner, he always extended a cordial greeting that lent a ray of light to brighten their pathway in the journey of life.

He leaves to mourn his death a loving wife and two children, A. J. Walbrink of Aberdeen, S.D. and Mrs. H. W. Pitstick of this city.

Funeral services were held in the U. P. Church on Thursday, Rev. VanHoute officiating, after which all that was mortal was placed in our City of the Dead.
