BORN IN ALTON, LIVED HERE NEARLY 56 YEARS

The Alton community was shocked and saddened by the untimely death early Monday morning, June 2, of Peter J. Hansen, 55, a life-long resident of the community, loved and esteemed by a host of friends.

Mr. Hansen was stricken with a cerebral hemorrhage Friday evening, May 30th at 5:30 and did not rally from the attack. He had not been in the best of health the past year or two, but continued his usual activities, The past several weeks he had been especially busy preparing and planning festivities and details of his son Karl’s first Mass to be held in the local St. Mary’s Church Thursday of this week, an event to which he had looked forward with happy anticipation and pride in his son’s splendid achievement. The Mass will take place as scheduled, as no doubt the young priest’s father would have wished. The night preceding his attack, he had driven with Mrs. Hansen to Sioux City to meet his son on the latter’s arrival from Washington where he completed his studies at Sulpician Seminary, before his ordination at the Cathedral of the Epiphany in Sioux City Saturday morning.

Mr. Hansen was born July 24, 1891 at Alton where he attended St. Mary’s Academy. He was one of the 14 children of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Hansen, pioneers of this vicinity. For a time he farmed south of Alton and later moved to town, where in recent years with the aid of his younger sons he has operated a dairy business and also conducted a successful business as representative of the Minnesota Woolen Company.

He is survived by his wife, Anne (Even) Hansen and four children, namely, Mildred, Reverend Karl, Arthur and Peter Junior; by ten brothers and sisters, namely John, Mike and Mrs. Victor Schneider, all of Alton; George of Remsen; Leo, Mrs. John Klein (Frances) and Mrs. Anna Guckenburger, all of Dell Rapids, South Dakota; Mrs. Mathilda Schuver, Parkston, South Dakota; Ben of Whittemore. Three brothers and sisters preceded him in death, including Odilo who died in the service of his country during World War I.

Mr. Hansen was a faithful usher at St. Mary’s Church and member of the financial committee, also served several terms on the local Town Council. His interests were many and his acquaintance wide. He was a favorite everywhere for his genial disposition, kindly and considerate ways. He was essentially a home-loving man and devoted to his family, loyal to his friends.

Solemn Requiem High Mass was held Wednesday morning at St. Mary’s Church at ten o’clock. The Reverend Karl Hansen was celebrant, the Very Reverend J.M. Neppel deacon, the Reverend George Schumacher sub-deacon, the Reverend James Fandel master of ceremonies.

Brothers and sisters were expected with their families for the rites. From Washington, D.C. on last Thursday came Mrs. Mary Kilburg and Miss Carrie Kilburg to be present at the first Mass of their grandson and nephew. They are guest at the home of their daughter and sister, Mrs. John Hansen.

A host of friends and relatives from near and far have called at the home to pay their last respects and to express their sympathy to the family.
