Shannon Wade Hamann, 38, died December 5, 2004, near his apartment in Brooklyn, New York, from injuries he received from a fall. Memorial services were held Wednesday, December 8, at the Greenwood Historical Cemetery and Crematorium, where there was an outpour of love by his many friends and family members who had a part in culogizing him.

Shannon was born March 15, 1966, to Kenn and Eloise (Heuer) Hamann, formerly of Rock Valley. He attended elementary and high school in Naperville, Illinois. In December 1991, he received an MFA from the University of Iowa Program in Creative Writing.

Shannon was a poet, and had a book published in Italy in 1996. Many other poems were published in various periodicals. He was attempting to publish his first novel.

He was a recipient of numerous awards and grants for his writing. The most recent was a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship to spend six months of 2005 in Japan, a prospect about which Shannon was very excited.

Shannon will be lovingly remembered. He is survived by his parents, Eloise and Kenn Hamann of Dublin, California and his sister, Heather Dawn Hamann of San Francisco, California. Current Rock Valley relatives are his maternal grandmother, Myra Heuer; Uncle and Aunt, Vernon and Hermina Hamann and cousins, Mike and Craig; Uncle and Aunt, David and Sandra Heuer, parents of cousins Melissa and Katie; numerous other extended relatives.
