Van Zanten, Cornelius "Casey" 1923-2017

Mr. Cornelius "Casey" Van Zanten, age 93, of Orange City, passed away on Monday, February 13, 2017, at the Prairie Ridge Care Center in Orange City.

There will be a memorial service on Friday, February 17, 2017, at 11:00am, at the Calvary Christian Reformed Church in Orange City. The Rev. John Klompien will officiate. Interment will be prior to the service at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. There will be a prayer service on Friday, at 10:00am, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Visitation will be after 4:00pm on Thursday, with the family present from 5:00pm to 7:00pm, at the funeral home.

Cornelius Edward was born on June 20, 1923, at Rock Valley, the son of John and Agnes (Mulder) Van Zanten. He was raised mostly at Sioux Center, where he attended a country school. His family also lived in Alton and Orange City, where he graduated from the Northwestern Classical Academy. He served in the United States Army during World War II.

On June 2, 1947, he married Audrey De Blauw in Orange City. They made their home in Orange City, where he was a salesman for John D. Brush safes and Electrolux vacuums. Audrey passed away on October 13, 2008, in Remsen.

Casey then became a resident of the Pioneer Memorial Home in Orange City, and last month, he moved to Prairie Ridge.

He was a member of the Calvary Christian Reformed Church and the Pressman-Kosters American Legion Post in Orange City. He enjoyed collecting brass, listening to music, reading, and talking on the telephone with his daughters and other relatives.

Survivors include his five daughters and their husbands, Judith and Leonard Nagel, of Grand Rapids, Michigan; Linda and James Johnson, of Grapevine, Texas; Andrea Pitts, of Phoenix, Arizona; Janet and Carl Mol, of Burnsville, Minnesota; and Melissa and Mike Cihak, of Newaygo, Michigan; seven grandchildren, James (wife, Trish) Pitts, Angela (husband, Brian) Ring, Casey Pitts, Joe Nagel, Benjamin (wife, Tia) Nagel, Zandt (wife, Brooke) Johnson, Kathryn Mol (special friend, Jake), Jillian Mol (special friend, Tony), and Andrew Mol; twelve great-grandchildren, a great-great-granddaughter; a sister and her husband, Irene and Adrian Ekdom, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; a brother, and his wife, Anthony “Tony” and Kathy Van Zanten, of Sarasota, Florida; a brother-in-law, Harold Hansen, of Orange City; a sister-in-law, Wilma Van Zanten, of Grand Rapids; and a special friend, Lois De Beer, of Orange City.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Henry Van Zanten, John Van Zanten, and Richard “Dick” Van Zanten, and his wife, Jean; and two sisters, Sadie Hansen, and Bertha, and her husband, Joe Rexwinkel.

Memorials may be directed to the Orange City Area Home Health and Hospice.
