Walter Groeneweg, 87, of Rock Valley died Saturday, January 3, at Hegg Memorial Health Center.

Funeral services was 10 A.M. Wednesday at United Reformed Church in Rock Valley. The Reverend Joel Vander Kooi officiated. Burial was at Valley View Cemetery.

Groeneweg was born November 9, 1927, at Sioux Center, son of Bastian and Lydia (Vanden Bosch) Groeneweg. He served two years in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He married Alta Mae Kats on October 14, 1953, at Rock Valley and they farmed north of Rock Valley where he also sold feed and fertilizer.

He had served on the Hope Haven board nine years, the board of Christian Education Chapter, was a deacon at Calvin CRC and volunteered at Hope Haven many years. He enjoyed sharing stories and visiting with people.

Surviving relatives include his wife, Alta Mae; sons, Dennis Dean (Joan) Groeneweg of Rock Valley and Leon Robert “Bob” (Cherie) Groeneweg of Rock Valley; daughters, Laura Beth (Greg) Getting of Sheldon and Gail Ranae (Henry) Blankespoori of Doon, brothers, John B. (Marion) Groeneweg of Hull, Simon (Judy) Groeneweg of Rock Valley and Albert (Joanne) Groeneweg of Rock Valley; sister Pat (John) Bauman of Rock Valley; grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a grandson; brothers, Paul and Leonard (Catherine) Groeneweg; sisters, Anna (Henry) Van Ginkel, Rena (Dick) De Vries and Lydia (Clarence) Terpstra
