REV. D. SCHOLTEN PASSES AWAY
Pioneer in Northwest Iowa--In Ministry About 40 Years -- 60 Years of Age

Rev. Dirk Scholten passed away at his home at Inwood June 29th at the age of 69 years. Many months ago the pastor and classical missionary underwent an operation from which he was recovering when other complications set in and in spite of blood transfusion and all that could be done he slowly lost strength and became partially paralyzed.

Rev. Scholten was born at Zutphen, Netherlands, Dec. 26, 1852. He came with his parents to America in 1870, his parents locating at East Orange (Alton) in 1875 and the young man attending school at Hope academy, now Hope college, Holland, Mich. His studies were interrupted by the grasshopper scourge here, his parents farming four miles northeast of Alton, and he taught school for several years finally returning and finishing his course at the seminary. Rev. Scholten had charge of churches at Anchton[?], Kans., Muscatine, Ia., South Bend, Mich., was classical missionary for the classis of Pella at Monroe, pastor at Edgerton, Minn., classical missionary at Ireton, Inwood and Valley Springs, two years ago moving back to Inwood where he completed his long service for the church.

The funeral was held first from Inwood and then from the Dutch Ref. church of Alton, Rev. J. P. De Jong preaching in the Holland language and Rev. Haverkamp in English, on Tuesday. A number of other pastors also were present and a host of friends. Burial took place beside his parents at Nassau cemetery.

Deceased is survived by a widow and eight children, six boys and two girls. The boys acted as pallbearers. They are Will, D. V. M., of Spirit Lake, Rev. George of New Hurley, N.Y., who preaches his farewell sermon there next Sunday and moves west, Richard[?], studying in Wisconsin, Rev. Walter[?] of Tarrytown, N.Y., Alfred, Hope College, Peter at home, Mayme and Alice, Inwood. He also is survived by his brother, G. J. Scholten, of Corsica[?], S.D., and a sister, Mrs. Johannes Vrymoet[?] of Alton.

The Democrat joins with the many friends in extending sincere sympathy to the bereaved in the death of this splendid Christian who served the needs of his people so nobly and well, a devoted father who gave to his children the very best and highest in life.
