Gertrude Grooters, 96, of Boyden, died Monday, October 13, at the Oak Park Care Center in Sheldon.

Services were held Thursday, October 16, at the First Reformed Church of Boyden. The Reverend Matthew Draffen officiated. Interment was in the Sheridan Township Cemetery near Boyden.

Gertrude, the daughter of Bouke and Jennie (Tuinstra) Vander Zwaag, was born June 28, 1901, near Newkirk. She received her education in country schools in the Newkirk area.

On February 10, 1927, she was united in marriage to Bernard Grooters in Boyden. After their marriage, the couple farmed in the Boyden area until 1960 when they retired and moved into Boyden.

Her husband preceded her in death on March 26, 1981, in Sheldon. Gertrude continued to live in Boyden until entering the Oak Park Care Center in Sheldon in February 1990.

She was a member of the First Reformed Church in Boyden, the Ladies Aid and the R.C.W.M. of the Church, and the Sheridan Homemakers Club.

Gertrude is survived by one son and his wife, Rodney and LaVonne Grooters of Hull; two daughters, Margene Vande Garde of Lynden, Washington, and Janet Grooters of Sheldon; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one sister, Elizabeth Dyhuizen of Sioux Center; and a host of other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband; son-in-law, Don Vande Garde; one grandson, Larrell Grooters; parents; two sisters, Hattie Boone and Anna Vander Zwaag.
