Mrs. Mary Kepp, age 90, of Orange City, passed away on Monday, January 23, 2017, at the Prairie Ridge Care Center in Orange City.

There will be a memorial service on Saturday, January 28, at 2:00pm, at the American Reformed Church in Orange City. The Revs. Michael and Elizabeth Hardeman will officiate. Interment will be prior to the service at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. There will be a prayer service, to which all are welcome, on Saturday, at 1:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Visitation will be after 4:00pm on Friday, with the family present from 5:00pm to 7:00pm, at the funeral home.

Mary Elizabeth was born on February 4, 1926, on her family’s farm near Irene, South Dakota. She was the daughter of Sigurd Olaf and Clara Pauline (Sanden) Bakke.

She was baptized on March 14, 1926, and confirmed on March 17, 1941, in the Trondhjem Lutheran Church, in rural Irene. In 1944 she graduated from the Irene High School. She then attended Augustana College in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. She was a school teacher for several years in the Orange City Elementary School. She also served as librarian of the Orange City Public Library for a short time.

On July 18, 1951, she married Lloyd H. Kepp in the Trondhjem Lutheran Church. They made their home in Orange City, where her husband worked with his father and brother in the W. A. Kepp and Sons Construction Company, later known as Kepp Construction. Lloyd passed away on April 24, 2004, in Orange City, after more than 52 years of marriage.

In earlier years, she helped organize, and was active with, the Orange City Municipal Hospital Auxiliary and Bazaar.

Mrs. Kepp was a member of the American Reformed Church, where she served as a deacon and an elder on the consistory. She was active in the Reformed Church Women’s ministries, as well as other areas of the church. She also served on the General Program Council of the Reformed Church in America and was a member of the Orange City Ramblers.

Survivors include her son, Bill Kepp, and his wife, Kristy, of Alton; two sisters-in-law, Virginia Bakke, of Irene, and Marlys Bakke, of Yankton, South Dakota; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Sanden and Luke Bakke; and a nephew, Richard Bakke.

Memorials may be directed to the American Reformed Church Foundation, Orange City Area Home Health and Hospice, or a charity of your choice.
