De Wit, Catherine (Mrs. John Elmer) 1925-2017

Mrs. Catherine De Wit, age 92, of Hull, passed away on Saturday, January 21, 2017, at Sioux Center Health.

There will be a funeral service on Friday, January 27, at 10:30am, at the First Reformed Church in Hull. The Rev. Kevin Yurk will officiate. Interment will follow the service at the Hope Cemetery in Hull. Visitation will be after 5:00pm on Thursday, with the family present from 5:00pm to 7:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Hull.

Catherine was born on January 10, 1925, in rural Hull, the daughter of John and Kate (Korthals) Van Den Oever. She was raised on a farm two miles north of Hull and attended the Lincoln No. 6 country school. She then did housekeeping for area families.

On June 1, 1945, she married John Elmer De Wit at the family home. They farmed around Hull, but mostly to the north of town, where she was a homemaker. In 1980, they moved into Hull, where they were custodians at the Foreign Candy Company, retiring in September of 1993. He passed away on September 18, 1994, in Rock Valley, after more than 49 years of marriage.

Mrs. De Wit was a member of the First Reformed Church.

She enjoyed baking and decorating cakes, camping, going to the Iowa Great Lakes, making flower arrangements and wall decorations, and spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Survivors include her two sons, Arlen De Wit and Kenneth De Wit, and his wife, Deanna “Dee”, all of Hull; six grandchildren and their spouses, Pam and Rick Tiedeman, Jeff and Amanda De Wit, Greg and Lynne De Wit, Matt and Dawn De Wit, Darin and Janelle De Wit, and Ben and Danae De Wit; thirteen great-grandchildren; three sisters, Joan Boeve and Evelyn Rens, both of Hills, Minnesota; and LaVonne, and her husband, Hilmore Kroese, of Hull; a brother-in-law, Anthony Smit, of Hull; and many special nephews and nieces.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Kenton Allen De Wit; a brother and his wife, John and Claretta Mulder; five sisters and their husbands, Gertrude and Herman Vander Vliet, Jean and John Russell Vander Zwaag, Cynthia and Ralph Oostra, Henrietta and George Wassenaar, and Wilmina Smit; and two brothers-in-law, Donald Boeve and Marvin Rens.

Memorials may be directed to the church building fund.
