From the Boyden Reporter, March 23, 1922:

STEPHEN BAIRD.

Stephen Baird was born in Wayne county, Ohio, October 9th, 1836. He moved to Story county, Iowa, when young and enlisted from there as a private in the Civil War. He served from October 28th, 1861, to December 31, 1863, in Co. E, 13th Iowa Infantry, when he received his discharge to enter the Wagon Corps till the close of the war. After the close of the war he was married to Miss Webb, the wedding taking place in Story county.

He homesteaded in Sioux county, north of Boyden, on the place now occupied by John Rensink. He moved to Boyden and conducted a hotel and livery barn for some time. Mr. Baird moved to Canada about 20 years ago, returning to Iowa about 2 years ago. He was taken ill at Burlington, Iowa, but was removed to Ft. Dodge, Ia., by his daughter, Mrs. M. Merrill, till his death, Sunday, March 19th, 1922.

The remains were brought to Boyden for burial on Tuesday and the funeral held from the United Presbyterian church, with Rev. W. T. McConnell officiating. He was accompanied here by his daughter, Mrs. M. Merrill, her daughter, and a friend, Mr. Fisher. Mr. Baird is survived by his wife, a daughter, Mrs. Merrill, a son Owen A. of Saskatoon, Canada, the latter being unable to attend his funeral. He also leaves several grandchildren and great grandchildren. The Reporter extends its sympathy to the bereaved relatives.

A brief note on his death in the Alton Democrat, March 25, 1922, Boyden news, says that he died at the home of his granddaughter at Ft. Dodge.
