Paul F. Goergen, age 77, of Granville died Thursday, August 14, 1997 at the Long Term Care Unit of the Orange City Hospital after a brief illness.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, August 16 at 10:30 A.M. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Granville. Reverend Clem Currans and Reverend James Tigges officiated. Burial was at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Granville under the direction of the Fisch Funeral Home, Remsen.

Paul Francis was born January 7, 1920 at rural Granville, the son of Frank J. and Elizabeth (Diederich) Goergen. He was raised in the Granville area and received his education at St. Joseph’s Catholic School in Granville. He married Maxine Engeldinger on October 20, 1942 at Alton. They made their home in Granville. He entered the Army October 25, 1943 and served until being discharged December 7, 1945. He was a substitute rural mail carrier from 1948 until 1951 and was also employed at Goergen Implement Company of Granville until December 1950. On January 7, 1951 he assumed the duties of Postmaster at Granville. He held that position until transferring to rural letter carrier in December 1961 which position he held until retiring in February 1980. Maxine died October 6, 1965. He married Ida (Beeck) Koch July 27, 1968 at Granville where they made their home. Ida died February 25, 1992. Paul entered the Happy Siesta Nursing Home in Remsen in November, 1993. In April, 1994 he transferred to the long term care unit of the Orange City Hospital.

Mr. Goergen was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, past church usher and past choir member; Catholic Order of Foresters, and was youth director of Catholic Order of Foresters from 1956 to 1970; Rural Letter Carriers Association; past president of Sioux County rural carriers; Disabled American Veterans; member of American Legion Post 95 of Paullina and past County Legion Commander and served on the Granville City Council from 1976 to 1977. He was an avid bowler and fisherman.

Survivors include four daughters and their husbands, Sheryl and Dennis Feller of Rapid City, South Dakota, Karen and Richard Glennie of Glencoe, Minnesota, Lynn and Gordon Pottebaum of Alton, Lois and Daniel Paulsen of Granville; a son, Dale and his wife Linda Goergen of Apple Valley, Minnesota; two step-sons and their wives, Stan and Joan Koch of Rochester, Minnesota and Leonard and Karen Koch of South Sioux City, Nebraska; 13 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; numerous step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Mrs. Leonard (Margaret) Roetzel of Adrain, Minnesota, and Mrs. Robert (Virginia) Harens of Worthington, Minnesota.
