FORMER LUTHERAN PASTOR HERE IS BURIED WEDNESDAY

Emil H. Gillmann, one of seven children born to Albert Gillmann and his wife, Caroline, nee Mueller, was born on February 3, 1872, in Lauenburg, Pormmern, Germany. When he was ten years of age he had the misfortune of losing his father through death.

In 1883 he came with his mother and two brothers, Albert Jr. and Paul to America and settled in Detroit, Michigan. Here he was confirmed in the Lutheran faith in St. Paul’s Lutheran Church by Pastor Meiser on Palm Sunday, 1885.

Already early in life, he felt the call of God to serve Him in the Gospel ministry. In September 1891 he entered Capital University, Columbus, Ohio, where brother Albert was completing his final year of theological study.

After his brother accepted a call to Walla Walla, Washington, he entered Lutheran Theological Seminary at Alton, Minnesota, which was later moved to St. Paul, Minnesota. On December 15, 1896, he was graduated from Luther Seminary and ordained to the ministry of the Lutheran Church.

During his 40 years of ministry he served congregations at Vernon Center, Minnesota, Hartford, South Dakota, Alvord, Sioux Center, Rockford, Nora Springs, Redwick, Corwith, and Merrill, all in Iowa.

On February 18, 1896, he was united in marriage with Emma Schulz of Wyandolte, Michigan. This union was blessed with 13 children, six sons and seven daughters. His wife and three children preceded him in death.

Reverend Gillmann passed away Sunday evening, February 19, at the age of 84 years and 16 days. He is survived by five sons: Emil of Waterloo, Paul of Rock Rapids, Arthur of Sioux City, Herbert of Waverly and Hilbert of West Palm Beach, Florida; five daughters: Emma, Mrs. Henry Stroyzewski, of Akron; Louise, Mrs. Charles Linderkam, of Charles City; Clara, Mrs. Elmer Jacobs, of Readlyn; Florence of Miami, Florida and Verna, Mrs. Clarence Lehman, of Akron. He is also survived by 17 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the Peace Lutheran Church of Sioux Center and interment was in the Peace Lutheran Cemetery, beside his wife and children.
