George Milton Gibbs, boyhood resident of Alton died at his home, 1315 Wesley, Evanston, Illinois, Saturday morning July 9th. He failed to wake up to play a round of golf, as planned for that morning.

He was born at Alton February 4, 1902, third child of the late Mr. and Mrs. Milo D. and Stella (Sargent) Gibbs, prominent early residents here. He attended the Alton public school and graduated from Lake Forest Academy, Lake Forest, Illinois and from the University of Iowa. For many years he has been employed as a photographer in Chicago, currently with Moffett Studios. Associated with him at the Studio was his brother Gerald and he was a loved member of his brother’s family.

Mr. Gibbs was a member of SUI Alumni Association, Beta Theta PI Alumni Association and the University Club and of the First Presbyterian Church of Evanston.

Funeral services were held at the Scott Funeral Home, Reverend Roy officiating at 3 o’clock P.M. A nephew, A.G. Dunkelberg of Osage, Iowa, came for the services and former Orange City friends present were the Lawrence Rieckhoffs and William Van Oosterhouts, of Chicago.

Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Jesse Allen of Glendale, Arizona and two brothers, Milo Gibbs of Litchfield, Connecticut and Gerald (Chip) of Evanston.

The latter arrived here Wednesday morning with his brother’s body and committal services were held at Nassau Township Cemetery at 11:00 A.M. with burial beside his parents. Reverend Harold Preston of First Presbyterian Church officiated and pallbearers were S.A. Lincoln and son Sam, Joe Pohlen, of Alton, Robert Rieckhoff of Orange City, Chan and Carter Pitts of Le Mars.

A.G. (Gibbs) Dunkelberg was here for the Alton services and other friends from a distance included Mrs. D.J. Gleysteen of Columbus, Ohio and granddaughter Gigi; Mrs. Otto Luhring of Ida Grove, Mrs. H.C. Shull of Sioux City; Mrs. C.W. Pitts and sons of Le Mars; Mrs. Ken Pollard of Toledo, Ohio; Mrs. B.O. Ashenfelter of South Bend, Indiana; along with many friends from Alton and Orange City.

During his school days here George was a general favorite with old and young, full of fun and good fellowship, a devoted son and brother. During his summer vacations he was a member of the Alton Baseball Club and of the local golf club.
