From the Rock Valley Bee, December 30, 1921:

YOUNG MAN MEETS WITH FATAL ACCIDENT
Dr. C. E. Greene was accidentally Shot and almost instantly killed while out hunting Monday afternoon.

One of the saddest and worst accidents that has happened in Rock Valley for many years occurred last Monday afternoon when Dr. C. E. Greene was accidentally shot by his own gun. He died a few minutes later. Dr. Greene and Leo Sandschulte were going out to hunt rabbits last Monday afternoon. They left town at about three o'clock in the latter's car and drove to a point near Carter's bridge some three miles west of Rock Valley and were about to get out of the car and look for game. Mr. Sandschulte had brought the car to a stop, and was in the act of stopping the engine. At the same time Dr. Greene was getting out of the car. He had stepped out on the running board of the car, taking his gun with him, when in some manner the gun was accidentally discharged, the shot taking effect in the side of Dr. Greene's face. He had his hand on the barrel of the gun and one of his thumbs was partly blown off. He fell back into the car fatally wounded. The gun dropped to the ground beside the car. Mr. Sandschulte turned the car around and in the shortest possible time drove to the Rock Valley Hospital, but the injured man was past all help. As he was carried into the hospital, he breathed his last.

Dr. Greene was born May 15, 1899, and was twenty-three years, seven months and eleven days old. His boyhood home was at Schaller, Iowa, where his parents still reside. He was a graduate of the dental department of the State University at Iowa City. He served in the late world war, and after being discharged from service, he located at Doon and opened a dental office there. After working at his profession a few months at Doon, he came to Rock Valley and opened an office. He was very successful in his work and was enjoying a good practice. He was a young man who made those whom he met and those with whom he had dealings his steadfast friends, and kept them so. He was a young man who apparently had a bright future before him, and his untimely death is very much regretted by all who knew him.

Besides his parents, he leaves his wife and child, a babe about six months old. It is certainly a sad blow to them, and the sympathy of the entire community goes out to them in their time of great sorrow and misfortune.

Mrs. Greene's parents reside at New Hampton, Iowa. Her father, brother and sister arrived in Rock Valley Tuesday, also a brother of the deceased came the same day from Schaller. The remains were shipped Wednesday morning to New Hampton where funeral services will be held.

From the Alton Democrat, Rock Valley news, December 31, 1921:

TRAGIC END OF ROCK VALLEY DENTIST
Dr. Clarence Green Killed By Discharge of Own Shotgun

Monday afternoon, Leo Sandschulte and Doctor Clarence Green went out west of town near Carters bridge to hunt. As soon as the car stopped, Doctor Green went to get out of the car and took hold of the muzzle of the gun when in some manner it was discharged and took effect in the right side of his face he receiving the full charge which lacerated his face in a terrible manner. Mr. Sandschuldt [sic] brought him to the local hospital for surgical aid but he was beyond the aid of surgery as life was extinct. His relatives were immediately advised of the terrible tragedy and Mr. Honeyman, father of Mrs. Green of New Hampton, Ia., and his brother H. Green of Schaller Ia., came and Wednesday the remains were taken to New Hampton for burial.

The deceased came here about a year ago and entered on the practice of his profession that of a dentist and was enjoying a lucrative practice and was considered by his many patrons as an expert in his profession. It is seldom that a community become[s] so afflicted by the passing of so excellent a young man as Dr. Green. He was esteemed and highly respected by everyone not only for his business integrity but for his gentlemanly decorum and kindness which was extended to all far beyond the circle of his immediate relatives. [Followed by several sentimental comments.] He was a service man in the world war and leaves a wife and child and a host of friends to mourn his untimely death.
