From the Alton Democrat, October 29, 1921, Hull news:

Mr. John Vanden Oever died Saturday morning [October 21] at the local hospital. He has been a patient there for some time, suffering with a broken leg and diabetes, the latter causing his death. He was buried Tuesday afternoon, funeral services being held at the First Reformed church conducted by Rev. Kregel.

From the Sioux County Index (Hull), October 28, 1921:

John VandenOever Dead

John VandenOever Sr., one of the communities most highly respected citizens, died at the local hospital last Saturday from a complication of diseases. It will be remembered that Mr. VandenOever has not been in the best of health for years, suffering from asthma severely at times. A few weeks ago he had an accident in which one of his legs was broken. Later on diabetes set in and nothing could be done to save him.

Mr. VandenOever was buried Tuesday. Services were held at 1 o'clock at the home and at 2:30 at the First Reformed church, Rev. J. H. Kregel officiating. Interment being made in Hope Cemetery. One of the largest crowds being present, as a testimonial of the respect in which he was held by all. The Index joins in extending hearrfelt sympathy to the bereaved relatives.
