From the Sioux County Index (Hull), October 21, 1921:

Myrtle Ward--McLaughlin, Dead

In a letter from J. W. Tamplin, of San Francisco, a former resident of Hull and an Index editor at one time, we learn that Mrs. J. L. McLaughlin, formerly Myrtle Ward and in her young womanhood a resident of Hull, died at her home in New York City on Wednesday Oct. 5, the burial taking place Friday the 7th in Woodlawn Cemetery New York City. Her mother Mrs. Ward was with her at the time of death, as were her husband and children.

One year ago in August she went from her home in Palo Alto, California to Japan to meet her husband and return to the home land with him. While in the Orient she discovered she was a victim of Cancer, it having attacked her in the right breast. On her return in November she was operated on in San Francisco for its removal. For a while it was thought the trouble was removed but later on it developed again and in April she went to [rest of line illegible] was made to kill the disease by the radium treatment at John's Hopkins University Hospital. The treatment arrested progress of the disease for a while but for a few months only and in September it rapidly approached a fatal termination. She joined her family who had removed to New York City and there passed away. All who ever knew Mrs. McLaughlin have reason to remember her for her many excellencies of character. [The rest of the article reports Mr. Tamplin's news of his own family.]
