After an illness of two days, Leora Landhuis, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Landhuis of Hospers, died Friday morning. She had suffered from tonsillitis before and her death is thought to have been caused from poisoning from the tonsils. She was 23 years old and had been employed in a bank at Hospers.

From the Sioux County Index (Hull), September 30, 1921:

Hull friends regret to learn of the death of Miss Leora Landhuis of Hospers, who was well known in this place, having been an instructor in the local public schools at one time. The young lady was taken ill suddenly while at a party in honor of her twenty-third birthday and died the following afternoon, Sept. 17th, at 5:30. The cause of her death has not been learned but it is thought to be the result of spinal meningitis. Deceased was the daughter of J. B. Landhuis and had been employed in her fathers bank at Hospers the past three years. Funeral services were held last week Thursday afternoon, in the Holland church at Hospers, which was filled to overflowing with sympathizing friends and relatives.

HOSPERS YOUNG WOMAN DIES

Miss Leora Landhuis, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J B. Landhuis, passed away at 5:30 P.M. Saturday, Sept. 17th at her home here. She had taken sick Thursday morning with tonsillitis which turned out to be very serious and which developed complications, taking the young life. The community can scarcely believe that she has gone, forever, and the heart broken parents have the heartfelt sympathy of the many friends.

Leora was born September 15, 1898, and graduated from the Hospers high school and attended Drake university for some time. She then taught school at Hull for a short time until her father's auto accident in which he injured his eyes. Miss Leora than came home to help in the bank where she has been for the past three years making a host of friends and being a tower of strength to the officials of the bank by her unfailing accuracy, intelligence and patience.

She is survived by two brothers and two sisters, Howard, Lester, Dorothy and Cornelia. The last named is teaching school at Boyden while the rest are attending school at Hospers. Miss Leora was a teacher in the Sunday school, a member of the Young Ladies' Mission bank and of the Christian Endeavor. Six years ago she joined the church.

Funeral services were held at one P.M. from the house and at 1:30 from the First Reformed church, Rev. G. H. Douwstra in charge, assisted by Rev. Ter Lonn[?] of Newkirk. A great many flowers were sent by friends. She was laid to rest in the Hospers cemetery.

Her bright and cheerful nature will long be remembered and shine upon all who knew her, making troubles and trials less heavy to bear.
