From the Rock Valley Bee, September 30, 1921:

MARY JANE BARTH

Mary Jane Barth died at her home in Rock Valley Wednesday morning at 10:45 o'clock at the advanced age of seventy-nine years, two months and five days. She had lived in Rock Valley for many years. Funeral services were held at the home this Thursday and the remains will be taken to Bradford, Iowa for burial.

DEATH OF MRS. JANE BARTH

Mrs. Jane Barth, whose death was briefly mentioned in last week's Bee, died at her home in Rock Valley Sept. 28, 1921, following an illness of but a few days. She had lived in Rock Valley and vicinity for many years, having been one of the pioneer residents here, and was a woman who was highly esteemed by all who knew her.

The subject of this sketch was born at Yaxley Huntingsonshire [i.e., Huntingtonshire], England, July 23, 1842. She came to this country in 1854 and after ten years residence in the state of New York moved to Franklin County, Iowa. In 1885, she came to Sioux County, Iowa, and since that time had been a resident of this vicinity. She was united in marriage July 4, 1857, to Thomas Griffin in New York state. To this union eleven children were born. Those of the children living are, Mary Keeling, Clarion, Iowa; Wm. Griffin, Anoka, Minn.; George Griffin, Rock Valley; Sarah Froning, Chapin, Iowa; Cora B. Pavik, Hartley, Iowa; Frances M. Ross, Luverne, Minn. Besides these she leaves 39 grand children and 25 great grand children.

Her husband died in 1881, while the family yet resided in Franklin County, and he was buried there. She was married again to Lewis Barth, in 1885. He passed on to his reward April 12, 1914. Mrs. Barth had attained the advanced age of seventy-nine years, two months and five days.

Funeral services were held at the home Thursday afternoon and the remains were taken to Bradford, Iowa, for burial. The bereaved relatives have the sympathy of friends in their great sorrow.

An obituary in the Alton Democrat, October 8, 1921, Rock Valley News, gives some additional details.

MRS. JANE BARTH ROCK VALLEY PIONEER PASSES ON

Mrs. Jane Barth, widow of Lewis Barth and a respected pioneer of Sioux County died at her home in Rock Valley Wednesday morning Sept. 28 after an illness of short duration due to senile debility.... When a girl of twelve years, she emigrated with her parents to America and located at Geneva New York, where she grew to womanhood and three years later was married to Thomas Griffin. [Lists her surviving children]

In 1868 they moved from New York to Franklin county Iowa. She was bereft of her husband in 1881 and four years later she with her family moved to Rock Valley and in 1885 she was married to Lewis Barth where they lived on a farm near Perkins and they resided there for a number of years, when they purchased a home in Hull, where they resided till after the death of Mr. Barth, which occurred April 23, 1914. Sometime after his death she disposed of her property in Hull and moved to Rock Valley where she has continuously resided till her passing.

She led a modest quiet life, genial with all whom she met. She was a model mother and a kind hearted friend.... [funeral and burial]
