A link with Rock Valley's past was broken Wednesday, Feb. 13, when Mrs. George Schaller, daughter of the founder of Rock Valley, died in the Storm Lake hospital after being a patient there since Jan. 22 after a fall at her home. Mrs. Schaller (Eloise Warren), the daughter of Col. Abraham Warren, founder of Rock Valley in 1879, was in Rock Valley during the 75th anniversary celebration in 1955. Funeral services for Mrs. Schaller, wife of a Storm Lake banker, were Friday afternoon, Feb. 15, at the Lakeside Presbyterian church. . She was prominent in social and church work there for many years and had been a member of the P. E. O. sisterhood for 58 years. Mr. Schaller is a former president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago and currently is chairman of the board of the Citizens First National bank of Storm Lake.
Survivors are the widower; a son, Harry of Storm Lake; a daughter, Mrs. Wyatt Yen ?? of Storm Lake; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Her father, Mr. Warren, came to Sioux county in 1875. They owned the farm land prior to the building of the Milwaukee Railroad on which the town of Rock Valley is now located. In 1879 Mr. Warren took a great deal in the town platting, planting the trees and building the early day stores. For some time they lived over one of these , and built, rented, and sold stores and houses including the Warren Hotel. One of Mrs. Schaller's earliest recollections as a youngster was before Rock Valley had a water system and the need of water to preserve trees was so great that of seeing him in a horse-drawn wagon with barrels of water, watering each individual tree. During this period the building of business houses on the main street was going on. Sites without cost for the building of schools and churches were freely given. Mr. Warren died in 1913 at the age of 85 years, and Mrs. Warren in 1918. Both are buried in the Rock Valley cemetery. The Schaller addition was named, after Mrs. Schaller. That is the local park and future site of the Rock Valley's swimming pool.
