Mr. Elmer Hofland, age 91, of Orange City, passed away on Sunday, December 4, 2016, at his residence.

There will be a memorial service on Friday, December 9, at 2:00pm, at the Calvary Christian Reformed Church in Orange City. The Rev. John Klompien will officiate. Interment will be prior to the service at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. There will be a family prayer service on Friday, at 12:45pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Visitation will be after 4:00pm on Thursday, with the family present from 5:00pm to 7:00pm, at the funeral home.

Elmer Vernon was born on March 17, 1925, in Orange City, the son of Jacobus and Gretje (Bonnes) Hofland. He was raised on a farm near Newkirk, where he graduated from high school.

On June 12, 1946, he married Marjorie Eleanor Siebersma in Orange City. They made their home mostly in Orange City, where he was an auto mechanic and a school bus driver. Marj passed away on August 18, 2008, in Orange City, after more than 62 years of marriage.

Elmer was a member of the Calvary Christian Reformed Church and a former member of the First Christian Reformed Church in Orange City.

He enjoyed driving, spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, playing cards, attending Northwestern College volleyball games, and listening to basketball games on the radio.

Survivors include his two sons and their wives, The Rev. Alan and Mary (Bogaard) Hofland, of Holland, Michigan; Carl and Ruth (Wester) Hofland, of Sioux Center; a daughter and her husband, Diane (Hofland) and Wayne Westenberg, of Orange City; eight grandchildren and their spouses, Chris and Susan Hofland, Cynthia and Kolin Redman, Michelle Hofland, Melissa and Josh Young, Matthew and Karen Westenberg, Maria and Brett Keepers, Julie and Josh Pickard, and Kristin and Dan Breen; 23 great-grandchildren; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Etta Hofland, of Orange City; Sophia Van Zee, of Rock Valley; Edna Katje and JR and Audrey Siebersma, all of Orange City; and Marilyn Faber, of Escondido, California; and many nephews and nieces.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by three brothers and their wives, John and Cornelia Hofland, Joe and Cynthia Hofland, and James Hofland; five sisters and their husbands, Catherine and Art Schuiteman, Angeline and Gerrit Horstman, Gertrude and John Jacobs, Henrietta and Jake Mars, and Elsiena and Henry Bos; and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Richard Van Zee, Lucille and Elmer Vande Brake, Hermina and Nelson Muilenburg, Steven and Lois Siebersma, Frank Katje, Stanley and Nelvie Siebersma, and Chester Faber.

Memorials may be directed to the Unity Christian High School in Orange City.
