Nicholas Bernard, one of our oldest settlers, died suddenly Saturday afternoon he has been ailing for some time, but death was not expected so soon. Mr. Bernard was born in Luxemburg, Europe. Dec 6, 1840. He was married there in 1865. His widow survives him as also his son Henry Bernard and his daughter, Mrs. Peter Reith; two sons having died when young. In 1870 Mr. and Mrs. Bernard came to this country settling in Wisconsin where they live for 14 years, when they came to live on a farm between here and Hospers where they lived and worked until a year ago when they moved to Granville. Mr. Bernard was honored and respected by all who know him. He was a good citizen, and good neighbor, and good man. The Democrat sympathizes with the bereaved family. The funeral was held Tuesday .

Note: The Sioux County cemetery Index lists Nicholas Bernard born 8 Dec 1840 died 2 Jun 1917 St. Joseph Cemetery Granville IA. His wife Anna born 2 Aug 1847 died 7 Aug 1924 Buried St. Joseph’s Cemetery Granville IA. Her obit was not readily found in the Sioux county newspapers on line.
Note: According to an ancestry.com report his wife was Anna Giescher born 1848. Aka - Guischer/Geisher.
