SAMUEL BEDARD PASSED AWAY EARLY TUESDAY MORNING
Homesteaded in Union County in 1886 and Endured Privations Incident to Pioneer Days
Samuel Bedard, a pioneer resident of this community, passed away at his home in this city at 12:10 Tuesday morning. He was taken seriously ill Saturday night with double pneumonia and because of his advanced age he was unable to fight the ravages of this disease Samuel Bedard, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bedard, was born at St. John, Canada, February 6, 1844, and passed away December 9, 1924, so was 80 years, 10 months and 3 days of age.

He left his home in Canada when a young man twenty-one years old and immigrated to the United States, homesteading on a farm in Union county, S. D., a few miles southwest of Hawarden. His early years on the homestead were days of privations. At two different times he was burned out by prairie fires and then he suffered heavy losses during the time of the grasshoppers. His hardships made him all the-more determined to stay by his homestead until he saw better times and in later years he prospered on his farm. In 1883 he was united in marriage with Miss Nellie Patterson and this union was blessed with ten children. One daughter, Mae, passed away when she was 12 years old. After he retired from the farm on which he had resided continuously for 53 years and moved to Hawarden and since that time he has made his home in this city. About two years ago ho was stricken with blindness and although he sought medical aid at various places his affliction was not benefitted. Because of his blindness time hung heavily but he bore it all patiently. He was always a good neighbor and a loving husband and father. He was reared in the Catholic faith.

Besides his wife he is survived by three sons, John Bedard of Sioux City and Harry and Fred Bedard of Hawarden and six daughters, Mrs. Lily Harvey, Mrs. Neva Conway, Mrs. Marjorie Wilken and Miss Dorothy Bedard of Hawarden, Mrs. Gladys Heald of Huron, S. D., and Mrs. Fleeta Bonnichsen of Gillespie, IL. He also leaves 21 grandchildren. Sincere sympathy is extended to the family in their hour of sorrow.

Funeral services were held from the Associated church at 2:30 this afternoon, with Rev. A. R. Hyatt of Beresford in charge. Interment was made in Grace Hill cemetery.

An Ancestry.com report states that he was married to Cornelia Nellie Patterson 1867-1931
