From the Rock Valley Bee, August 5, 1921:

MRS. G. H. VUGTEVEEN

As briefly mentioned in last week's Bee, Mrs. G. H. Vugteveen passed away at her home in Rock Valley last Thursday morning, July 28, at the age of fifty-six years, six months and thirteen days. Some six years ago she suffered a stroke of paralysis from which she never fully recovered, although she had been up and around until a few weeks ago.

The subject of this sketch was born in the Netherlands January 15, 1866. She came with her parents to this country when she was twelve years of age. Her parents settled at Overrisel, Mich., where she grew to young womanhood. She was united in marriage April 17, 1884 at Overrisel to G. H. Vugteveen. The following year they moved to New Holland, S.D., where they lived for eleven years. They came to Rock Valley vicinity in 1895, and a few years later moved to town where Mr. Vugteveen has since been engaged in the implement business.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Vugteveen leaves nine children, Ed Vugteveen of near Pease, Minn., William, Mrs. Dena Post, Mrs. Fannie Dearborn, Mrs. Christena De Vries, Mrs. Zena Dykstra, Lydia, Garrit[i.e., Gerrit] and Henry all of Rock Valley. All were present at the funeral. She also leaves two sisters, Mrs. Henry Beckvord of Saugatuck, Mich., and Mrs. John Spirk of Zeeland, Mich.

Funeral services were held from the Christian Reformed Church in Rock Valley Monday afternoon and the remains were taken to Valley View Cemetery. The funeral was largely attended by sympathizing friends, and during the services all business places in Rock Valley were closed.

The deceased was a good Christian woman and was highly respected by all who knew her, and she will be greatly missed, not only in the family circle, but by many friends as well, who extend sincere sympathy to the bereaved family.

A different obituary, but containing much of the same information, was published in the Alton Democrat, August 6, 1921. It identifies her as Mrs. Gertie Vugteveen (nee Scholten). It says that her daughter Zenia Dykstra lives in Inwood, and spells her sister's surname Sprik. It characterizes her as "faithful and helpful, a devoted companion and loving mother, a good friend and neighbor."
