Eugene Helwig 92, of Sioux Center, IA, died Saturday, November 5, 2016, at Royale Meadows Care Center in Sioux Center, IA.
 
     Memorial service will be held 10:30 AM Saturday, November 12, 2016, at Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center with Fr. Doug Klein, officiating.
 
   Visitation will be Saturday from 9:00 AM until time of service at Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center, IA.
 
     Eugene Frank Helwig was born December 12, 1923 the son of Frank and Rose (Nichols) Helwig in Chicago, IL.  He was raised in the Chicago area and received his education in Chicago.  He continued his education and received a degree in Electrical Engineering after World War II.  He was united in marriage to Georgia Louise Rainey in Chicago.  Eugene served his country in the United States Navy during World War II from 1940 until 1945.  Eugene and his family lived in many places over the years, including Chicago, IL when he worked for Skil Power Tools; Fayetteville, NC when he worked for Black & Decker; Wichita, KS when he worked for Standard Precision and he later moved to Sioux Center and worked for Dyna Tech.  He was a member of St. Hedwig’s Catholic Church in Chicago, IL.  While serving in the military he served on the USS Fuller APA 7 from 1940 – 1945 during WWII.  He was involved in the battles at Guadalcanal, Bougainville, Asiatic Pacific Campaign and European-African Campaign.   For his military efforts, he received four bronze stars, and a Victory medal.  He was a member of the American Legion and the Knights of Columbus.  His hobbies and interest included woodworking, model trains and planes, gardening, camping and fishing, ham radio and he especially loved spending time with his family.  Gene was most proud of his service to his country.  While moving to many new places during the years of starting new plants as an electrical engineer his family developed a bond that was very evident.  He loved working with his hands and with his sons.  His most remembered trip was when he took part in the Siouxland Honor Flight in September of 2008.

     He is survived by his children; Brian (Keith) and Sue Helwig of Sioux Center, IA; Kimberly and Mike Rowland of Roanoke, VA; Brandon (Brandy) Helwig of Willow Springs, NC; grandchildren, Jonathon and Krystal; Kaine; Brandon and Michael; Nathan, Erin and Brian; great grandchildren, Paige and Maddison Grave; Maxx and Mason Helwig; Heather Bruinsma; Ellysue and Addison Helwig; and Ana, Caitlin, Chloe, and Jairo Hernandez.

     Eugene was preceded in death by his wife, Georgia in January of 2007; parents, Frank and Rose Helwig; sister Adeline Helwig; and son, Bobby Gene Helwig.
