PASSED AWAY SUNDAY NIGHT AFTER LONG ILLNESS--WAS 68 YEARS OF AGE AND HAD RESIDED IN THIS COMMUNITY 27 YEARS--FUNERAL HELD TUESDAY

Mrs. Sarah Finnie, for the past twenty-seven years a resident of this community, passed away at her home in this city shortly after 9 o’clock Sunday evening, following a long illness. Mrs. Finnie had been in failing health for several years and last June suffered a stroke and since that time has been practically bedfast. She suffered a second stroke about a week prior to her death and from that time failed rapidly until the end came Sunday evening.

Funeral services were held at 2:30 Tuesday afternoon at the Methodist Church, conducted by Reverend A.M. McIntosch of Sioux City, formerly pastor of the Presbyterian Church of Hawarden and interment was made in Grace Hill Cemetery.

Sarah Whittington was born at Mull, Ontario, Canada, August 30, 1858, so was just past 68 years of age. She grew to womanhood in Canada and in 1890 was united in marriage with John Finnie, one of the pioneers of Union County. She resided on the farm northwest of Hawarden, until after Mr. Finnie’s death in 1914 when she moved to Hawarden and her home has since been in this city. Her sister, Miss Mary Jane Whittington, has made her home with her since moving to Hawarden in 1914. In her youth Mrs. Finnie united with the Methodist Church in Canada but after coming to this community joined the Presbyterian Church. She was a devout Christian and steadfastly followed the rules of Christian conduct and living in her every day life. Outside of her home the affairs of her church were her chief concern.

Mrs. Finnie is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Mary Jane Whittington of Hawarden and Mrs. George Birkenshaw of Rocanville, Saskatchewan, Canada, and three brothers, Edward Whittington of Hawarden and John and William Whittington of Blenheim, Ontario, Canada. She is also survived by six stepchildren, Fred, Will and Robert Finnie and Mrs. Ralph Olson of Hawarden, Ed Finnie of Alcester and Mrs. D.O. Miner of Santa Barbara, California.
