From the Rock Valley Bee, February 11, 1921:

JOHN SAS, Sr. DEAD

John Sas, Sr., a former resident of Rock Valley for many years, died at his home in Orange City Wednesday morning [Feb. 9] at 4:00 o'clock after a lingering illness with cancer for several months. He was street commissioner and city marshall at Orange City, a position which he had held for the past two years, but was forced to quit work six months or so ago on account of his failing health. He sought medical assistance and advice in various places, as well as from his local doctors, but all told him the same story, and he was resigned to his fate.

The deceased had lived in Rock Valley for a number of years before going to Orange City. He was engaged in business here at different times and also served as city marshall. He moved with his family to Orange City two years ago. His Rock Valley friends will be grieved to learn of his death.

The remains will be brought to Rock Valley for burial. Further particulars are not available at this time.
Later: Funeral services will be held Friday from the First Reformed Church in Rock Valley.

From the Rock Valley Bee, February 18, 1921:

OBITUARY OF JOHN SAS, SR.

The funeral services of John Sas, Sr., an account of whose death was given in last week's Bee, were held at the Reformed Church in this city Friday afternoon [Feb. 11]. The services were largely attended by many sympathizing friends, and many beautiful floral offerings were in evidence. The pall bearers were composed of the mayor and town council of Orange City, where the deceased had served as city marshall for the past three years prior to his sickness.

John Sas was born in Holland January 23, 1867, where he grew to manhood, and was married there May 10, 1888. He came to this country in 1889 settling in Woodbury county where he lived seven years. From there he moved to Sioux County and lived in Rock Valley and vicinity for several years. He farmed here for some time, and later moved to town, and entered the restaurant business. He served as town marshal for a few years, and later had charge of the home bakery, but he sold this business on account of poor health. He later regained his health and felt well as ever. Three years ago he moved to Orange City and accepted a position as town marshall, a position which he held as long as his health would permit. His death which occurred at his home in Orange City last week Wednesday, was due to cancer.

Mr. Sas was popular wherever he was known, and he had many friends in Rock Valley. He was a man of a kind and jovial disposition and always made friends wherever he went. Besides his wife he leaves three children, Mrs. C. Johnson and Mrs. Homer Dumerager of Spencer, and John Sas, Jr. of Rock Valley, all of whom were present at his funeral and with him during his sickness. The bereaved relatives have the sympathy of many friends.
