Deceased was in ill health for the past 4 months, and had submitted to several operations during that time, but all that medical science and excellent care could do, could not save his life.

Mr. Lanning moved to Sioux county in the year 1873 and at once took up a homestead here, which is the farm now known as the John Roekel place. Mr. Lanning spent the largest part of his life in this community, living here about fifty years. When leaving the farm he conducted a restaurant business in Boyden for many years and was always known as a successful business man. After leaving Boyden, the Lanning family moved to Gary, S.D., where they lived for 2 years, then to Inwood, Iowa, where Mr. Lanning conducted a hardware store for four years. After selling the hardware store in 1919 Mr. Lanning made California his home until last fall when he was taken ill and returned to South Dakota for medical treatment.
