Mrs. Alice Ericson, 71, was found dead in bed at her home Saturday afternoon.

When Mrs. Martin Kier did not receive an answer to telephone calls or a knock at her home, Chief of Police Walter Larson was called. Accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. Kier, Mr. Lawson went to her apartment and forced his way in.

Dr. M.O. Larson was called and stated that Mrs. Ericson had died from a stroke about six hours earlier. Coroner Vander Ploeg of Sioux Center was called and agreed that Mrs. Ericson had died natural causes.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday afternoon at the Big Springs Baptist Church with Reverend D.A. Miller in charge. Interment was in the church cemetery under the direction of Warren Nilson Funeral Services of Alcester.

Ralph Johnson sang two numbers. Pallbearers were John Wiksen, Martin Kier, Elmer Swanson, Aljie and Harold Larson and Lee Blomberg.

Alice E. Johnson, youngest daughter of Andrew and Carolina Johnson, was born June 10, 1880on her father’s homestead at Komstad, Clay County, South Dakota, where she grew to young womanhood, enduring with the family the many hardships of the early settlers.

She attended the local rural school and later South Dakota University at Vermillion for two years. She also took a course of instruction in sewing in which art she was proficient.

On June 28, 1902, she was united in marriage to Jalmer F. Ericson to which union two children, Irene Lillian and Arlington, were born. They lived on the farm together for 35 years with the exception of two years spent in Sioux City.

On November 27, 1937, Mr. Ericson died after a lingering illness of two years but Mrs. Ericson remained to manage the farm for five years. For a time she represented the State of Brookings, South Dakota. In December, 1942, she moved to Hawarden--not retiring but devoting her time to practical nursing. Part of the time she spent in Sioux City, returning to Hawarden at intervals for rest.

Mrs. Ericson was baptized and became a member of Big Springs Baptist Church in February, 1914. She retained her membership until her death.

She is survived by two children, Mrs. Earl Blackburn of Astoria, Oregon and Arlington Ericson of Sanborn, Iowa; a sister, Mrs. Mary Peterson of Wagner, South Dakota; a brother, Adolph Johnson of Beresford; three grandchildren, Laurel, Jerald and Pamela Kae Ericson and 16 nephews and nieces.
