From the Rock Valley Bee, September 17, 1920:

DEATH OF JOHN VER WEY

John Ver Wey died at the home of his sisterinlaw, Mrs. D. Ver Wey, in this city, Sunday evening [September 12], at the advanced age of eighty-five years three months and seven days, his death being due to the natural decline of old age.

The subject of this sketch was born in Holland, May 7, 1835, where he received his early education and grew to manhood. He came to this country twenty-six years ago, coming directly to Sioux County and has lived in Rock Valley and vicinity since that time. For several years past he has made his home with his sisterinlaw, Mrs. D. Ver Wey.

He was a man who was respected by all who knew him. Besides other relatives, he leaves to mourn two brothers, Gerrit and Jess Ver Wey, and two sisters, Mrs. H. Ver Meulen of Rock Valley, and another sister in Holland.

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon from the Reformed Church in this city and the remains were taken to Valley View Cemetery for burial.

A similar obituary was published in the Alton Democrat, Rock Valley news (Sept. 18). It adds that "He led a quiet and secluded life, and was always kind and considerate to those about him."
