Mrs. Ballard for many years a resident of Hull before her removal California died at her home in Beach at 6:30 A. M. October llth at the age 80, nearly eighty one years. The funeral services were held at the Cleveland Undertaking home at 2:30 p. m. Friday October 3 and the remains were sent to this place, Hull Iowa, for burial, besides those of her husband and other dear ones in beautiful Hope cemetery.

All those who resided here when Mrs. Ballard did, will remember her well as she was always foremost in all civic welfare work, always taking an active interest in all public improvements for the benefits of her fellowman.

Mr. Charles Ballard accompanied the remains of this mother to Hull, and arrived Wednesday evening. The funeral here was held Thursday afternoon October 19th. The Index joins the friend of the surviving member for the Ballard family in extending heartfelt sympathy.

Obituary. Mary Adelaide Barry was born Jan 10, 1842 at Edmeston, NY. At the age of seven years she came with her parents to IL, where she spent her early girlhood. She began her chosen vacation as teacher at the age of 16 years. She was married to R. J. Ballard in the year 1864. To this union four children were born two sons and two daughters. Five years of the couple’s married life were spent in Kansas. Upon returning to Illinois they settled in Chicago for a number of years after which they moved to Iowa, from which state came to California.

Mrs. Ballard was an active Club women, being a life member of the W. C. T. Union, the Womens’ relief Corp. the Chautauqua. The State president of the Womens’ suffrage Association of Iowa, Eastern Star, Spanish War Veterans, Sons of Veterans Auxiliary and the Congregational church.
