Sioux County Capital March 15, 1945

Rock Valley: Mrs. Berend De Jong passed away at her home here on Monday March 5, at the advanced age of 87 years. She had been confined to her bed for several months.

Fokeltje De Vries was born at Drachten Friesland, the Netherlands on January 8, 1858. On May 12, 1879 she married Berend De Jong and to this union eleven children were born. In 1882 the young couple came to America with one son, settling near Grand Rapids Michigan. After four years they came to Sioux County, Where they lived in several towns. Six years later they moved to Le Mars staying there for eight years, and then returned to Sioux County. The last years of her life were spend at Rock Valley.

She is survived by eight children, Mrs. Wm. Ruisch and Mrs. Arend Vander Bok of Rock Valley, Mrs. John Ruisch, Mrs. L. A. Brunsting and Herbert De Jong of Sioux Center, Rev. Benjamin De Jong of Ashton, Jennie De Jong of Canton SD, and Rev. Frank De Jong of Bellflower CA. She is also survived by 25 grandchildren, and 18 great grandchildren, two brothers, John and Otto De Vries, and Mrs. B. Van Hul. Berend De Jong died on January 23, 1927. Three children also preceded her in death, Robert De Jong, Rev. Otto De Jong and Mrs. Dirk Niekirk.

Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at the A. Vande Bok home, and at the Chr. Rev. Church with Rev. H Kuyper conducting. Interment was at Orange City. All of the children except Rev. Frank De Jong were present at the services.
