Sioux County Capital June 12, 1997

Mrs. Dora De Jong, age 98, formerly of Orange City and Paullina, died May 26, 1997 at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown. A memorial service was held on Wednesday, June 11 at 10:30 a.m. at the American Reformed Church in Orange City. The Rev. Harlan Van Oort officiated. Burial followed at West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City under the direction of the Van Etten-Oolman-Van Gelder Funeral Home, Orange City.

Dora was born March 29, 1899 in Orange City, the daughter of Gerrit and Effie (Wassenaar) Klay.
On June 20,1920 she married Harold De Jong. They made their home in Orange City until 1941 when they moved to Paullina. On Nov. 23, 1993 she became a resident of the Iowa Veterans Home. Dora was an active musician throughout her life. She served as choir director and organist at the First Presbyterian Church in Paullina, and she directed the O'Brien Women's Chorus. She was a lifetime vocalist, singing upon request into her early 80s. Mrs. De Jong was a past Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, past member of the Daughters of the Nile, and past member of P.E.O.

Survivors include her two sons, Robert of Kennewick, Wash., and Norman of Brea, Calif; nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband; a daughter, Leona Haverkamp; two sisters and two brothers. Her faith, her dedication and her service to others were an example and inspiration to those who knew her.
