Berend De Jong Well known Sioux County man passes away.

Berend De Jong died at his home at Orange City at 6:30 Sunday afternoon, having reached the age of 71 years . He was born in Friesland Netherlands Dec 1, 1854 and was married to Vogelrje De Vreis in 1878. Two years later a child was born and the following year the family caome to the USA locating at Grand Rapids MI, where they resided a few years. Then they moved to Orange City, returning to Grand Rapids. Two years later they returned to Iowa and lived in LeMars, Rock Valley, Hull and then in Orange City where they have lived the past four years.

To this union were born eleven children the eight living being as follows: Mrs. W. Ruisch, Orange City; Mrs. A. Vanden Bok Rock Valley; Mrs. John Ruisch Orange City; Mrs. Rev. L. A. Brunsting Sully: Herbert De Jong, Rock Valley; Jessie De Jong Orange City; Ben De Jong Boyden’ Frank De Jong Orange City; Three children preceded their father in death, Mrs. D. C. Niekerk, Robert and Otto De Jong.

Mr. De Jong became ill last summer with anemia, rallying a little early in September, but he contracted flu and failed gradually and was confined to his bed the last ten weeks, during which time he was lovingly cared for by his daughter, Miss Jennie, while Frank came home from school at Grand Rapids to attend to the store. The deceased served for many years as elder and as a leader in various Chr Ref. churches in Iowa. During his residence in Orange City he was a member of the Second Chr. Ref. church.

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the home at one o’clock and at 1:30 at the Frist Chr. Ref. church.
