Hawarden Independent March 15, 1923

Mrs. Albert (Sophia) DeJager passed away at the Hawarden hospital at an early hour Sunday morning from pneumonia. On Feb. 28th she gave birth to a baby daughter at the hospital and was getting along nicely until she contracted pneumonia but in her weakened condition she was unable to withstand the ravages of this dread disease and although she made a valiant fight for her life, at times rallying to a point where it was believed she might recover, the hand of death was not to be denied.

Funeral services were held at the home, south of Ireton, at noon today and at the Presbyterian church in Ireton at 1 o'clock this afternoon, conducted by Rev. Wm.Terpsma, pastor of the Christian Reformed church. Interment was made in the cemetery at Lebanon where four infant children of Mr. and Mrs.
DeJager are buried.

Sophia Boskma was born slightly more than 35 years ago.. On March 11, 1910, she was united in marriage with Albert DeJager at Sioux Center and her death came on the thirteenth anniversary of her marriage. Immediately after their marriage they went to housekeeping on a farm northeast of Hawarden and continued to reside in that community until two years ago when they moved onto a farm south of Ireton.

Seven children were born to them, four of whom died in infancy, while three, Alfred, Hattie, and the baby girl, only two weeks old, together with the husband are left to mourn the loss of a good wife and mother. She is also survived by one brother, who arrived this morning from his home in Texas to be present at the funeral. The sincere sympathy of the entire community goes out to the grief stricken husband and motherless children.
