Dorothy Ann Klynsma was born on December 24, 1937, on the home farm near Alton, Iowa, to William E.J. and G. Johanna (Mulder) Roghair. She attended the Floyd Independent Country School and graduated from the Newkirk Consolidated High School in 1955. She was a long-time member of the First Christian Reformed Church in Hospers, where she made her profession of faith in May of 1955. She and her husband were lifelong advocates for Christian Education.

She married J. Norman Klynsma on February 28, 1956, in Hospers. They lived in LeMars for one year, where their first daughter was born. In 1957, they moved and made their home in Hospers, where they worked and raised their family together for 54 years until Norm’s death on August 9, 2009.

In the early years of their marriage, Dorothy worked as a waitress in LeMars until the birth of their first child. She also sewed clothes for her children and others. In 1965, Norm and Dorothy became the sole proprietors of the O.K. One Stop Service in Hospers. In 1969, they and Floyd Blom started the wholesale tire business, B & K Tire Company, and they became the sole owners of this business in 1974. They worked hand in hand for 37 years; Dorothy was bookkeeper for many of those years, and all of their children helped out at one time or another. They treasured their weekly tire route to Sioux Falls, and their annual trips to Arizona and California each winter to visit family and friends. They loved to travel and explore every corner of God’s wondrous creation.

Dorothy loved to read and crochet, making blankets and afghans for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She will always be remembered for her love of cooking, her famous apple pies, and her pie crust, which she provided for the Chit Chat Café for many years. She remained in the family home after Norm’s death until 2013, when she became a resident of the Prairie Ridge Care Center, due to the progression of her Alzheimer’s disease. She received the best care at Prairie Ridge, and made friends with many of the staff. She cherished the time she spent with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by seven children, twenty-five grandchildren, and eighteen great-grandchildren; Pam (Tim) Van Den Berg, of Tucson, Arizona, and their sons Christopher (Joyce), of Little Chute, Wisconsin, and Matthew, of Tucson; Deb (Harlyn) Jasper of Hospers, and their children Chad (Amanda), of Aliquippa, Pennsylvania, Corey Thorne, and Clint (Kari), all of Sioux Falls; Ed (Sue Otte), of Hospers, and their children Maria (Kayle) Nielsen, of Omaha, Nebraska, Julie (Dan) Jacobsma, of Sheldon, Karen, of Council Bluffs, Michael (Rina), and James (fiancée Kymlee Rook), all of Hospers; Roxie (Perry) Foreman, of Orange City, and their children Jen (Phil) Elgersma, of Orange City, and John, of Hospers; Randy (Julie Ten Haken), of Omaha, and their children Greg, Tony, and Daniel, of Kansas City, Missouri, Carly and Maggie, of Omaha, and Hannah (Jon) Callicotte, of Moore, Oklahoma; John (Val De Jong), of Hospers, and their children Justin, Lindsey, Amber, and MaKendra, all of Hospers; and Don (Tammy Vander Molen), of Sioux City, and their children Jeffrey, Dylan, and Sophie, all of Sioux City.

She is also survived by her brother and four sisters, Sye (Ruth) Roghair, of Orange City; Mary (Lee) Woudstra, of Hospers; Caroline Valencia, of Visalia, California; Sylvia Bellonger, of Sioux Falls; and Billie Muilenburg, of Hospers; Norman’s two sisters, Joleen (James) Vermeer, of Sioux Center; and Carolyn (Danny) Heltenberg, of Clarksville, Arkansas; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a great-grandson, Jadon Immanuel Jasper; a great-granddaughter, Autumn Lynn Elgersma; a grandson-in-law, PFC William E. Thorne; two brothers in infancy, both named William E.; four brothers-in-law, Carlos Valencia, Sr., Robert Muilenburg, Charles Vande Kamp, and Frank Klynsma; a sister-in-law, Marge Klynsma; two nephews, Mark and Daniel Roghair; and a niece, Dana (Heltenberg) Calhoun.
