Mr. Jacob Mantel, age 87, of Orange City, passed away on Wednesday, January 13, 2016, at the Sioux Falls Veterans Administration Medical Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

There will be a memorial service on Thursday, June 16, at 10:30am, at the American Reformed Church in Orange City. The Revs. Michael and Elizabeth Hardeman will officiate. Interment will be at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery on Monday, June 20. Visitation with the family will be on Thursday, the half hour before the service, at the church.

Arrangements are with the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Jacob was born on August 15, 1928, in Hospers, the son of Cornelius “Cornie” and Gertie Josie (De Roo) Mantel. He was reared on a farm in the Orange City area. He joined the United States Army on March 26, 1951, and served in Heilbronn, Germany, with the 28th Division of the Pennsylvania National Guard.

On July 23, 1951, he married Mabel Ruth Longhenry in Orange City, where they made their home. After returning home, he was employed at a number of placces including Westra Salvage, Groen Plumbing and Heating, Wielenga Garbage, and ending his career as the outside custodian at the Sioux County Court House. “Jack” retired in May of 1990.

“Jack” was an avid bowler for over fifty years, having a 202 triplicate and a high game of 297. He also golfed for over fifty years, at one point all twelve months at the Sioux Golf and Country Club, where he had a hole in one on August 16, 1994. He also enjoyed restoring toy tractors, both John Deere and International Harvester, and then making one of a kind tractors. His pride and joy was making a tractor driven saw from a picture and mounting it on an International Harvester.

Mr. Mantel was a member of the American Reformed Church.

Survivors include his wife of more than 64 years, Mabel; a brother, Lester Mantel, of Palm Springs, California; three nephews, Lyle (Lonnie) Gorter, of Escondido, California; Bryan Gorter, of San Diego, California; Roy (Tammy) Gorter, of Cresco, Iowa; a brother-in-law, Lewis (Donna) Longhenry, of Raymore, Missouri; four sisters-in-law, Carolyn (Bill) Mc Call, of Ames; Carryn Longhenry, of Rapid City, South Dakota; Anna (Larry) Boehm, of Omaha, Nebraska; and Bess Hobson (special friend Chris Widder), of Las Cruces, New Mexico; and many nephews and nieces.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Harriet (Arnold) Gorter; and four brothers-in-law, Harold Witter, Jim Hobson, Martin Longhenry, and Edward Longhenry.
