HAWARDEN, IOWA ~ Cornelia (Otten) Peterson, 97, of Hawarden, Iowa passed away on Thursday, July 14, 2016 at the Hawarden Regional Healthcare Hospital, in the company of her loving son and daughter, Dirk and Rosalind.

Funeral Service will be 2:00 p.m. Sunday, July 17th at the First Baptist Church in Hawarden with her son, Dr. Edward R. Peterson officiating. Burial will follow in the Grace Hill Cemetery in Hawarden. Visitation will begin at noon Saturday, with a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. conducted by Pastor Stuart Schreur at the Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden. Cornelia (Otten) Peterson was born in the Netherlands on April 17, 1919, the daughter of Dirk and Grace (Nab) Otten. She arrived in Canton, South Dakota after getting to New York on November 7, 1919. She married Virgil Peterson on December 28, 1941 in Hawarden, Iowa. They farmed in the Hawarden and Alcester, South Dakota area until 1976, when they retired and moved to Hawarden. Virgil passed away on August 17, 2001.

Cornelia was a member of the First Baptist Church of Hawarden.

She is survived by her four children and their families. They are Rev. Edward Peterson and his wife Mary of Coralville, Iowa and their 2 children Rob and Stephanie, Lloyd Peterson and his wife Karen Hansen of Plymouth, Minnesota and their son Ryan, Rosalind Peterson Vickers and her husband Doyle of Hawarden, and Dirk Peterson of Alcester, South Dakota and his 2 children Jesse and Erica. Cornelia is also survived by 6 great-grandchildren with one on the way and the last of the 10 siblings, her older sister, Anna Otten of Hawarden; also many nephews and nieces.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Virgil; and a grandson, Matthew R. Peterson.
Her family wishes to thank friends and family for the outpouring of sympathy and good wishes, and the Hawarden Regional Healthcare Hospital staff for their kind and loving care during this difficult time.
