Mrs. H. C. (Helena) De Bruin passed away at her home in Hawarden, Sunday, May 12, following an illness of more than a year with cancer. When her condition became serious, she was taken to different places for treatment, but in each place they told her the same story; it was too late.

Mrs. De Bruin, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Van Duyn who have preceded her in death many years ago, was born at De Lier, Netherlands March 22, 1888. Her parents died in the Netherlands, and she later came to this country and made her home in Rock Valley where she grow to womanhood. In 1910 she was united in marriage with Herman De Bruin of Rock Valley. They lived here a few years and then moved to Hawarden where she has since resided.

Mrs. De Bruin leaves her husband and three children, Anna, aged 21 Lena 9,and Courtney 6,
and five sisters, Mrs. A. G. Vander Lugt and Mrs. A. G. VanderMeer of Rock Valley; Mrs. Martin Van Geest, of Cutlerville, Mich., Mrs. Edward De Brainof Sibley, Iowa, and Mrs. E. Gelderman, Fairview, S. D., and two brothers, Will Van Duyn and Leen Van Duyn of Colton, S. D.

Short funeral services were held at the home in Hawarden at 12:00 Tuesday and the remains
were brought to Rock Valley where services were held in the Chr. Ref. Church beginning at 2
p.m. and the remains were taken to Valley View Cemetery

Was 47 Years of Age and Had Livedin Hawarden 16 Years.—Leaves Husband and Three
Children.

Mrs. H. C. De Bruin, a resident of Hawarden for more than sixteen years, passed away at her
home in this city at 10:30 Sunday morning following a lingering illness. While she had been
very poorly since last November, she was bedfast only for about a week receding her death.
Brief funeral services were held at the home at 12 o'clock Tuesday noon and at 2 o'clock that
afternoon at the Christian Reformed church at Rock Valley, conducted by Rev. John Gritter,
pastor of the church there, and Interment was made In the Rock Valley Cemetery.

Helena Willemina Van Duyn was born at De Lier, Netherlands, March 22, 1888, so was just
past 47 years of age at the time of her death. In 1906, at the age of 18, she came to America,
coming directly to Rock Valley. There he was united in marriage with Dr. H. C. De Bruin on
Aug. 21, 1910. They continued to make their home in Rock Valley until September, 1918, when they moved to Hawarden and have since continued to reside in this city.

Besides her husband she is survived by three children, Anna, now 21 and teacher in a rural school near Chatsvorth, Leona, 9, and Courtney, 7. She also leaves four sisters and two brothers, Mrs. Elizabeth Van Geest of Cutlerville, Mich.; Mrs. Bertha Vander L,ugt of Rock Valley; Mrs. Susie De Bruin of Sibley, Iowa; Mrs. Minnie Gelderman of Fairview, S. D.; and
Will and Lane Van Duyn of Colton, S. D.

During her residence here Mrs. De Bruin had been very much of a home woman. She was devoted to her family and her Interests centered largely in the welfare of her loved ones over whom she watched with the most tender care. Her death is a severe blow to her husband and children and the sympathy of the community goes out to them in their bereavement.
