From the Alton Democrat, May 6, 1916: Rock Valley news:

Herbert Remmerde, residing five miles southwest of Rock Valley, met with a distressing and sad accident Wednesday of last week. While plowing in the field, he reached over with a stick to knock out some trash that had accumulated in the wheel, when his foot caught in the other wheel, breaking and shattering the bone frightfully. A physician was promptly summoned and the patient was made as comfortable as possible. On the following Friday, the limb was amputated. The strain and ordeal was too severe and on Saturday morning at an early hour he passed away.

Mr. Remmerde was held in the highest esteem in the community in which he lived and was an honest man, a good citizen and good neighbor and friend. He was a member of the Reformed church. He was in good circumstances and worked hard to accumulate what he possessed and when he could enjoy the fruits of his toil, he was ruthlessly torn away by death from his companions and children.

Funeral services took place at Carmel Tuesday afternoon in the presence of a large concourse of neighbors and friends. The bereaved have the sympathy of their many friends in their hour of extreme sorrow.
