From the Alton Democrat, April 22, 1916: Rock Valley news:

John Henderson, an old resident of Rock Valley, died suddenly Monday night, April 17th, of heart failure. During the day he worked in his garden apparently in his usual health, but that enemy that follows mankind in every walk of life, came when least expected and he stepped from life's busy stage and disappeared forever behind the curtain of mortality.

The deceased was born in Sweden January 15, 1838, and at the time of his death was in the 79th year of his age. He was married to Miss Anna Samson in Norway and 49 years ago he with his family emigrated to America and located at Calmer, Ia., where they lived for several years. From there they moved to Hull where he held the position of section foreman on the Milwaukee R.R. for twelve years and later was transferred to the Rock Valley section where he rendered faithful service until incapacitated by old age and retired. He has resided here for 24 years.

The companion of his youth died 15 years ago and since that time he has lived with his son. He was the father of six children, four sons and two girls, namely, Hodick Henderson and William Henderson of Rock Valley, Alfred Henderson of Blairstown, Ia., Ingall, who died several years ago, Mrs. Lena Shutter of Burkrum, Minn., and Mrs. Mary Schuller of Maurice. When a young man he learned the trade of cabinet maker, but never plied his trade after he came to America. He was a quiet unassuming man, inoffensive and had no enemies.

Funeral services occurred at the home of his son Wednesday afternoon at three o'clock, after which his remains were laid to rest in Valley View cemetery. The family have the sympathy of their friends in the hour of their sorrow.

(The Rock Valley newspaper is missing for this time period. A shorter obit was published in the Sioux County Index, Hull, April 21.)
