From the Alton Democrat, April 8, 1916: Rock Valley news:

Cornelius Tuynman, residing seven miles west of Rock Valley, died Thursday morning March 30, due to erysipelas of the throat, after an illness of two weeks' duration. Medical skill did what they could to stay the hand of death which follows mankind in every lane of life, but of no avail, and after a heroic struggle he submitted to the inevitable and passed to that bourne from whence none ere return.

The deceased was born September 6, 1871, in the Netherlands and was at the time of his death, 44 years, 6 months and 24 days old. When but a lad of thirteen years he emigrated with his parents to America and came direct to Sioux county and located at Orange City where they lived for one year, and in 1866 they moved to Hurley, S.D., where he remained for three years, when he returned to Sioux county where he resided until his passing. He formed the acquaintance of Miss Nellie Hazlett, which eventually culminated in their marriage March 8, 1899 and their connubial relations were congenial and pleasant. No children were born to them.

He acquired a fine farm and laid aside a competency by thrift and frugality, and was always a liberal contributor to any useful enterprise and to those less fortunate than he. He was affable and companionable and a gentleman of the highest type and was held in the highest esteem by his most intimate friends. He was a member of the I.O.O.F., Modern Woodmen of America, and the Brotherhood of American Yeomen, and was quite active in fraternal and social affairs and will be missed by his associates in those societies.

He leaves a father and mother, a kind companion, five brothers, namely, Peter Tuynman of Rock Valley, William Tuynman of Grantsburg, Wis., John Tuynman of Rock Valley, Reynold and Henry Tuynman of Winford, S.D. Four sisters as follows: Mrs. Alfred Hazlett of Hudson, S.D., Mrs. J. C. Hurdlebrink of Fairmont, N.D., Mrs. Joe Benson of Hawarden and Mrs. Otto Coyer of Fairview, S.D.

The funeral services occurred at the family residence, Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Harmon, pastor of the Methodist church at Hudson in the presence of a large concourse of neighbors and sympathizing friends, which was an evidence of the esteem in which he was held by those who knew him. His remains were laid to rest in the Crandall cemetery south of Inwood. We cannot comprehend the mysterious acts of a wise providence, but some day we shall understand. We are cheered with the happy thought that we shall all meet again in that "far away home of the soul." The bereaved family have the sympathy of their many friends in their hour of extreme sorrow.
