From The Alton Democrat, March 4, 1916: Rock Valley news:

Mrs. J. D. Ver Maanen, residing three and one-half miles east of Rock Valley, died Friday, the 25th. She had been sick and under a physician's care for some time and was in the local hospital for treatment. All that medical skill could do was of no avail and she passed to her eternal reward, leaving a family of seven children, four boys and three girls--the youngest being a mere babe, which makes her passing more pathetic, as it needed a mother's tender care.

She was born in the Netherlands and at the time of her death was 40 years, 5 months and 3 days of age. The bereaved husband and children have the sympathy of their friends in their hour of sorrow. Funeral services were conducted at the Christian Reformed church in Rock Valley Tuesday, by the pastor, Rev. H. Kuiper, and the remains interred in Valley View cemetery.

This appears to actually be Luitje Van Maanen. The Sioux County Cemetery Index has this entry: Van Maanen, Luitje, 25 Feb 1916 mother Valley View Cem Rock Valley IA. There are many other Van Maanens in the Index, and only one Ver Maanen.

The Rock Valley newspaper is missing for this time period.
