From the Alton Democrat, February 12, 1916: Rock Valley news:

This community was shocked when it was learned that Michael Keegan, a highly respected and esteemed citizen and extensive farmer, living five miles north of Rock Valley had suddenly and unexpectedly died at his home of heart trouble on February 2nd. On the previous night and day he was here in town and sat up with his aged mother who is in delicate health, and the summons came when least expected, reminding us of the uncertainty of life.

The deceased was born in Kenosha, Wis., 60 years ago and when a babe, his parents came to Iowa and located near the town of Lyon, where they lived for seventeen years. From there they moved to Petersville, where they resided for a period of fifteen years, and from there they came to Rock Valley where he continuously resided until his death. By thrift and economy he acquired a competency and was generous to those less fortunate than he, and was ever ready to aid those in distress.

He was married to Miss Maggie McGinn at Petersville, Ia., February 6th, 1889, and as a result of this union eight children came to bless their home, five boys and three girls, all of whom survive him. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and also a member of Doon camp Modern Woodmen of America and a devout member of the Catholic church. He is survived by his aged mother, a devoted companion, his children; one brother, James Keegan; two sisters, Mrs. Julia Hayden and Mrs. James Loura, of Rock Valley.

Funeral services occurred February 4th at St. Mary's Catholic church conducted by the pastor in the presence of a large gathering of neighbors and friends. After which all that was mortal was tenderly laid to rest in the Catholic cemetery south of town. The bereaved have the profound sympathy of their large circle of neighbors and friends in their hour of extreme sorrow.
