Martin Van Buren Billings was born July 31, 1833 at Rochester, New York. He departed this life January 24, 1918, was united in marriage November 24, 1854, to Sarah Eveline Williams. To this union was born eight children, two of whom died in infancy. They moved to Hopkinton, Delaware County, in 1857, residing on a farm where his wife died on July 19,1879.

On July 12, 1883, he was united in marriage to Naomi A. Collins in Manchester, Iowa. They moved to Sioux County in 1884 residing on a farm north of Ireton. Several years later they retired from active farm life and moved to LeMars where they lived a few years, returning to Ireton to pass his declining years. He leaves to mourn his departure, a wife, three sons, Lew M. of Deer Lodge, Montana, Walter G. of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Eugene of Eagle Grove, and Christine, an adopted daughter, and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church for many years, also a member of the I.O.O.F. Lodge in good standing. Mr. Billings better known as Grandpa Billings, was loved by all and especially by children, having a cheery word and smile for all. He will be missed by all of Ireton.
