Dr. James Welch Guthre, father of Superintendent Guthrie of Orange City, died suddenly at this son's home Wednesday morning. He appeared to be in excellent health till a few moments before his death. He was born in Westmorland county, Pennsylvania on July 20, 1927.

In 1879 he moved to Bedford where he practiced medicine for thirty years. He graduated from the University of Michigan in1862 and enlisted in the union army the same year as assistant surgeon, serving till the close of the war.

On June 7, 1871 Dr. Guthrie married Adda Sarah Bentley at Cleveland OH where he owned a drug store for three years. Three sons were born to them, Charles, Harry and Will. The two former are residents of Los Angeles CA. His wife died on November 12, 1909. Short services were conducted by Rev. Mc Ewan of the American Reformed church at Superintendent Guthrie's home on Thursday afternoon. The remains were taken to Bedford Iowa where they will be laid to rest beside the remains of his wife.
