Dies Saturday After Long Illness

Mrs. Peter Smit, 57, died Saturday, Dec. 31, in the Iowa City University hospital of what was described as a blood clot. Mrs. Smit had been ill for several years and was at the hospital for about two weeks prior to her death.

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 12:30 in the Vander Ploeg funeral home and at 2:00 o'clock in the Netherlands Reformed church with the Rev. John Van Zweden officiating. The deceased had lived in this area for about 12 years prior to her death. Miss Frances De Groot was married to Peter Smit at Volga, S. D., in 1927. The couple lived in Rock Valley at that time for about two years when they moved back to the Volga area. They stayed there for about 11 years and then returned to Rock Valley. She is survived by her husband, mother, Mrs. Alice Piefenga, one step-daughter, Russell (Jennie) Miller, two brothers, Julius of Arkansas and Herman of Rapid City, three sisters, Mrs. Mitchel Mans and Mrs. Otto Meyer both of Volga and Mrs. George Van Beek of Lynden, Wash.
