From the Rock Valley Bee, July 9, 1915:

FARMER CHOKED TO DEATH

John Stallman, a farmer living near Granville, was found dead at five o'clock Sunday morning near the door of his buggy shed. He was lying beneath the carriage with his neck caught in one of the rear wheels. It is supposed that he slipped and caught his neck in the wheel and choked to death.

From the Alton Democrat, July 10, 1915:

J. STALLMAN DIES BY STRANGULATION

A peculiar and extremely sad accident occurred Friday night on the Stallman farm four miles south of Granville which cost John Stallman his life. Mt. Stallman had been away that day and returned home during the night. He put the team in the barn and lost his life in putting the buggy into the shed in the way he had been doing it for years.

There is a steep little incline into the shed. Mr. Stallman was in the habit of pulling the front wheels over the incline, then he would put his back against the back of the rig and push it in. This he evidently did this time and he slipped, falling on his back. The buggy in coming back down the incline, cramped, and the back wheel ran over Mr. Stallman's neck. As the buggy was wedged by the cramped wheels, Mr. Stallman could not move same off his neck and he choked to death. He was found in the morning with the wheel resting on his neck.

Mr. Stallman was born in Louisville, Ky., July 24, 1871 so was nearly forty-four year of age. He leaves to mourn his untimely death, his wife and five children. Funeral services were held in St. Joseph's church of Granville Tuesday morning, Rev. Gerleman officiating. The Foresters and the Remsen Fire Insurance company, both of which Mr. Stallman was a member, followed the corpse in a body and carried their banners. It was one of the largest funerals ever held in Granville. Mr. Stallman was a well known and industrious farmer.
