From the Rock Valley Bee, June 11, 1915:

DEATH OF JOHN HOWELL

John Howell, a resident of Rock Valley for over twenty years, passed away at his home in this city at 4 o'clock Tuesday morning [June 8]. The deceased had not been well for several years past and at times suffered severely with asthma, but until within he last two years he was able to do light work most of the time. For several months past he has not attempted any kind of work but frequently came down town. He gradually grew weaker until about three weeks ago he suffered a stroke of paralysis. He rallied from this and was able to be about again and walked down town several times. He never fully regained his speech after the first stroke and it was difficult to understand him. Monday he came down town to do some shopping; he was feeling as well as usual. He was in Foppe's store making a purchase when he suffered a second stroke. He was taken home and medical assistance summoned, but he never regained consciousness. He passed peacefully away Tuesday morning and his suffering was at an end.

The subject of this sketch was born in Jackson county, Illinois, March 22, 1855. Here he spent his early life and grew to manhood. In the spring of 1883 he came to Storm Lake, Ia., where he lived about eight years and then came to Rock Valley where he lived almost continuously until death claimed him. He was united in marriage Nov. 24, 1883 to Miss Mary Walpole at Storm Lake. To this union were born three children. Two of them died in infancy. One son, Roy Howell, is at home with his mother.

Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon from the Methodist church at two o'clock, conducted by the pastor, Rev. J. L. Shroyer. The bereaved family and relatives have the sympathy of many friends.
