Mr. Vernon Muilenburg, age 90, of Orange City, passed away on Monday, December 7, 2015, at the Orange City Area Health System.
There will be a funeral service on Friday, December 11, at 10:30am, at the First Reformed Church in Maurice. The Rev. Donald De Kok and the Rev. Gary Hegstad will officiate. Interment will follow the service at the Sherman Township Cemetery near Maurice. Visitation will be after 4:00pm on Thursday, with the family present from 5:00pm to 7:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.
Vernon John was born on September 13, 1925, in rural Orange City, the son of Anthony and Martina (Korver) Muilenburg. He was raised in the Middleburg area, where he attended a country school and graduated from the Orange City High School.
On February 18, 1949, he married Margaret Van Gelder in Orange City. They farmed at Middleburg until 1964, when they moved to a farm south of Maurice. They retired into Maurice in 1992, and moved to Orange City in 2006. In 2013, they became residents of the Pioneer Memorial Home and in 2015, they moved to the Landsmeer Ridge Retirement Community, both in Orange City.
“Vern” was a member of the First Reformed Church where he had been an elder and a Sunday school and catechism teacher. He served on the board of directors of the Maurice – Orange City Cooperative Elevators. He thoroughly enjoyed farming.
Survivors include his wife of more than 66 years; a son and his wife, Daryl and Donna (Van Holland) Muilenburg; and a daughter and her husband, Faye and Albert Vander Lugt, all of Maurice; six grandchildren and their spouses, Alan and Jill Muilenburg, of Maurice; Sandy and Peter Jenkins, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Lisa and Ben Vos and Carrie and Michael Vander Schaaf, all of Orange City; Kristi and Jason Hargens, of Le Mars; and Amy and Aaron Muth, of Ireton; sixteen great-grandchildren; three sisters and their husbands, Beth and Henry Haarsma, of Orange City; Audrey and Lee Van Engelenhoven, of Helena, Alabama; and Judy and Richard Gabel, of Surprise, Arizona; two brothers-in-law and their wives, Wilbert and Clara Van Gelder, of Arizona; and Arnold and Marge Van Gelder, of Orange City; and three sisters-in-law, Theresa Goslinga, of Orange City; Helen Van Gelder, of Sioux Falls; and Carolyn Vande Brake, of Sanborn.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Eugene Rensink; two great-grandchildren, Kaleb Hargens and Abigail Muth; and two sisters, Marilyn Muilenburg, and Gwendolyn, and her husband, Peter Hoogland.
Memorials will be directed to the church for missions.
